Harpenden Bowls Club have two ladies teams through to the County Fours quarter-finals at Bishop’s Stortford next Monday.

The County fours team of Debbie Turner, Jennie Redford, Beryl Birch and Lucy Ratcliffe advanced after three good wins.

The first victory came against another Harpenden four of Beryl Driscoll, Val Christiaans, Cynthia Williams and Lorna Thomson, who they beat 30-7.

Their next match was against an Oakhill team who conceded after the 16th end with a score at 23-6 shots against them.

In the last game against Stevenage’s team of Sue Brackley, Marge Emery, Sue Moody and Muriel Cooper they edged through after the match went to an extra end.

The other County fours team of Dena Roberts, Linda Newby, Jan Holland and Linda Brooks won 16-14 against a Potters Bar team of Anita Bowman, Beryl Burbridge, Sandra Smale and Pam Rodgers.

They were then given a walkover against a team from Oakhill due to illness. However the men’s county four of Peter Waller, Doug Hall, Simon Burgess and Tony Redford lost 26-21 on a very tricky Oak Hill green.

The similar County triples team of Waller, Burgess and Hall lost 19-16 to Welwyn Garden City.

It was another closely contested match which Harpenden went into the final end five shots down and it left them with too much to do.

In the national competitions, Tony Redford beat Ian Snook of Welwyn and District 21-12 in the singles.

Meanwhile Roberts, Jennie Redford, Tony Redford and Nick Muir won the first round of the National Mixed Fours 23-12 against Les Roberts’ Harperbury team.

Noel Roberts, Ken Murray and Tony Redford won the first round of London and Southern Counties triples 15-12 against a Barton-le-Clay triple.

On Saturday the Harpenden ladies lost 126-119 to a St Albans and District team.

The top rink for Harpenden was Ishbel McDonald, Val Goodyear-Burrows, Viv Dale and Lesley Tutt.
