Townsend clinched the Top Ten Championship after a 92-65 win over Welwyn and District.

Facing the might of Garston, the cup holders, for the second time in ten days Townsend hoped to pull off another victory against them in the county semi-final at Welwyn and District.

The singles was won by Simon Gilbert, defeating Bradley Coles 21-12, and this was closely followed by the pairs combination of Jason Hall and Gary West who triumphed 23-19. The Fours were next to finish with their victory clinching the overall match decision as well. This was a very convincing 24-12 win through Alan Charran, Alfie Long, Dave Houghton and John Godman.

Townsend’s reward was a final against Welwyn. Godman won the singles match 21-16 against Phil Russell. In the fours, Peter Thomson, Jason Hall, Gary West and Andrew Briden had amassed no less than 42 points against their opponents’ ten to make the overall result a formality with Townsend winning the trophy.

In the area final of the London and Southern Counties Fours, Townsend visited Bletchley Town and edged through to the regional finals after a 19-18 win.

This visiting rink comprised of Carl Robinson, Mike Cowell, Charran and Peter Armstrong.

In the district fours, the Townsend rink of Long, Hall, Houghton and West defeated opposition from Welwyn Garden City 29-4.

Townsend progressed to the semi-finals in the district two wood triples. The trio of Hall, Simon Gilbert, and Danny Macro overcame a Harpenden rink 22-14 and the team of Thomson, Roger Potter and Houghton beat North Mymms 25-13.

The Bowls county finals were held at Bishops Stortford on Sunday and Townsend had representation in no less than three finals.

He competed in his third final of the day, in the fours, along with Hall, Houghton and Briden.

For the third time in as many weeks the opposition was Buntingford, and for the third time the outcome was the same, with Townsend winning 23-18.
