St Albans Bowling Club's 23rd annual gala was won by Barbara Whitaker, Enid Hall, Shirley Burrow and Sylvia Pullen from Rowley Lane after they won all four games.

The runners-up from Harpenden were Jan Reid, Sue Murray, Pauline Taylor and Avery Hills who won three and drew one of their games.

Barclays Bank is matching pound for pound all money raised at the Gala by Tricia Gascoine who is a retired Barclay’s employee. This will be the fifth year running that Barclays has supported Tricia in their ‘Barclays in the Community’ programme.

The money raised will be used to improve the facilities at the club for the benefit of members. A total of £98.53 was raised for Ladies’ Captain Maureen Ryland’s charity Macmillan Cancer Support.

St Albans men met Townsend in a closely-fought league game winning 57-56. Top rink was John Bennett, John Cooper, Dave Kiff and Peter Kay (23-14). St Albans won 60-20.

In a very competitive club league match on Sunday the men of Welwyn Garden City edged through 66-60 to maintain their top of the table position.

Despite losing seven crucial shots in the last two ends the rink of Bert Sumner, Ron Smith, Ted Salvidge and Steve Wilson were top rink for St Albans 26-21 meaning WGC scored 60-20 league points.

St Albans Ladies won both rinks securing a 44-32 victory with Diana Tribe, Maureen Grimward, Jacy Farrer and Jill Morris making the most of the post-tea session to win 21-11. St Albans Ladies scored 80-0 league points.

In the annual commemorative match for the Gordon Ridout Trophy St Albans District recorded a comfortable 110-98 victory over Clarence Park. Rod Perks, Colin Smith, John Cooper and Ken Harding managed a win.

Berkhamsted maintained their pre-tea form and ran out eventual winners 86-60 on Saturday. St Albans’ only winning rink of Alan Turner, Phyllis Nicholls, Paddy Boyle and Peter Kay battled to win 20-12.

In a mid-week ladies match at Batchwood, St Albans came out on top in a very competitive game winning by five shots.

It was a district league game with both clubs winning on two of the four rinks. The result was 50-30 to St Albans. Top rink was Maggie Kendrick, Maureen Rylands, Tricia Gascoine and Jill Morris (26-15).

Alan Turner and Dave Church lost to Lewis Smith and Brian Smith of Hemel Hempstead 32-8 in the St Albans and District Men’s Pairs Competition.

St Albans played Townsend in the Jones Cup and the away team of Turner, Oliver Wall, Kay and Wilson won by three shots but the home team lost by 13. Townsend won the match by ten shots overall.

The St Albans triples team of Diana Tribe, Debbie Turner and Sybil Steers had a good win against Sheila Thorne, Joyce Terry and Shelia Roberts of Harperbury in the St Albans and District Ladies Triples competition winning 21-11.

Pauline Gardiner and Doreen Gray beat Sylvia Pullen and Pat Stamp of Rowley Lane 20-13 in the Ladies’ District Pairs.
