St Albans City manager David Howell has admitted he is hoping to sign former Wycombe and Leyton Orient striker Scott McGleish.

The 38-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Barnet, is looking for a new club after being released by Bristol Rovers, and Howell believes the locally based forward could be tempted by a move to Clarence Park.

Howell said: “We’re interested in Scott McGleish. He lives locally and obviously we’d like to sign him. He played for Barnet last season and is definitely a 20-goal-a-season striker. He is in the twilight of his career but I think it would be a good move for him. We’ll just have to wait and see.

“I think he has other offers on the table that are quite good for him.

“He has got to weigh up whether he is willing to travel to a club or if he wants to have the advantage of staying locally. We’re due to speak to him in the next week.”

The Saints have swooped for Hemel Hempstead Town striker Lewis Toomey. The 21-year-old impressed last season against St Albans and Howell managed to persuade the former Kings Langley goalscorer to join them.

Howell, whose squad returned to training at the weekend, said: “Lewis is a young, honest and hungry player. He is a natural goalscorer with good movement but he is a bit green.

“He scored for Hemel against us last season and looked lively. I’ve kept an eye on him since then and I was pleased he chose us when he had other sides that wanted to sign him.

“We want to help him with his game and in turn he can help us in attack by scoring goals. We need to understand his strengths but with a bit of hard work he can get 20 goals a season.”
