Great Britain and St Albans Hockey Club captain Ellie Watton was on fire at Oaklands on Saturday as she scored four times in a 5-3 win over Maidenhead.
The Tangerines were on the back foot for most of the first half and trailed 2-1 at half time before Emily Panniers equalised in the 45th minute.
But it was Watton who took the game out of sight with three second-half goals, the last of which was a forehand screamer four minutes from time, to match her backhand strike at the start of the game.
On the same pitch 24 hours earlier, club head coach Martin Scanlon had launched the club’s taster hockey sessions for a group of enthusiastic Oaklands students.
Scanlon and his St Albans team-mates then had a frustrating Saturday, surrendering a 2-1 lead in the last three minutes to lose 3-2 at Cambridge City in a game they had dominated.
Other weekend results included a pair of wins against Wimbledon by the men’s second team (1-0) and third team (9-0).
There were wins against Royston by the St Albans Bodiceas (3-1) and the men’s fourths (3-2) along with a fine 6-2 cup win on Sunday for the ladies seconds against Old Loughtonians.
The men host Blueharts at Oaklands on Saturday.
